Community Greenhouse

The Community Greenhouse is located at the Galiano Community School and represents an ongoing growing opportunity. It also hosts the Spring Starts Project for gardeners wishing to get an early start on the growing year.

The seed starting group got off to a solid start on March 4th with our first plantings of the season. Initial attendance went from 7 participants to a total of ten participants by the end of the month. At March’s first meeting, seed starting soil and soilless mixes, their components and purposes were discussed. The agreed upon recipe was made up in a large enough batch for everyone to plant their seeds. The initial planting included parsely, celery, fennel, onions of various types and leeks.

For the dedicated gardener in the northern hemisphere, the growing season is never early enough or long enough. With access to a well situated greenhouse we can begin gardening in early spring long before the nightly temperatures will allow us to start planting outside. Warm weather plants can be started indoors and moved into the greenhouse as evening temperatures permit, finally taking up permanent homes in the greenhouse soil. Other seeds can be started in the greenhouse for transplants that will eventually move outdoors, harden off and be planted in our gardens.

The focus of the Community Greenhouse is to promote social and environmental sustainability. The project allows community members to grow their own organic herbs and vegetables 12 months of the year while engaging in a welcoming community environment. A portion of the greenhouse is used by the school children for their purposes from September through June though there is lots of room for sharing.

The cold and rainy spring in the unheated greenhouse thwarted our first attempts to grow transplantable vegetable and herbal seedlings in April and May. Undaunted, and with the help of Martine and Janice,we abandoned our miniature and unhealthy starts and planted Martine’s new seedlings. By mid June we were inundated with fresh herbs and furthermore, as of today we have harvested many varieties of tomatoes from Leo and Rosemarie’s starts, cucumbers from seeds , more herbs and are awaiting the ripening of seeded watermelon and cantaloupe.

There will be no Work Party this weekend.

We’ll continue preparing the greenhouse for planting, and transplanting adult seedlings. We will do succession planting of other crops. Please bring your own containers and pots. We will also begin making plans for the ongoing greenhouse use. More people are welcome to join the year round greenhouse group.

We’ll be potting up our mature transplants, and seeding cucumbers and melons, and succession planting of other crops. Please bring your own containers and pots. We’ll also be preparing the greenhouse for planting.

Just a reminder that our next seed starting meeting is this Sunday, April 1st at 1pm at the community greenhouse up at the school.
We will be planting early tomatos, second rounds of brassica (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) and all kinds of greens and late peppers/eggplants. Please bring your seeds and washed containers and trays.

Members who have taken trays home to germinate are asked to bring the shared trays of successfully growing transplants back to the greenhouse and we will share the plants around with other members and look at transplanting anything that requires it.

The next Greenhouse Starts gathering is Mar. 18th at 1pm in the Greenhouse. Please bring any of the following seeds that you are going to use: greens, lettuce, choys, mixed greens, early tomatoes and washed seeding pots.
